The Role of a Reading Floor Lamp in Your Home

Reading floor lamps primarily serve a task lighting function. They are placed next to an armchair, sofa, or bed so that the light falls diagonally from behind over the reader’s shoulder. A bedside reading lamp is usually installed on the side of the dominant hand to avoid casting shadows on the text.

A common mistake is choosing a stylish lamp without sufficient brightness or adjustability. The result is weak reading light that forces users to shift position or bring the text closer to the source. Every reading lamp must be functional and ergonomic first and foremost.

Technical Specs: Eye-Friendly Reading Light

Luminous flux (lumens) is a key factor. For comfortable reading, we recommend at least 400–600 lm per position. For small print or older readers, 700 lm may be better. Adjustable brightness is crucial because too much light without dimming increases contrast and can cause unpleasant glare.

Illuminance (lux) on the book page should be around 300–500 lx. This range ensures readability without eye strain. Lower levels tire eyes quickly, while excessive brightness without diffusion creates harsh contrasts between the lit area and surroundings. A well-designed reading lamp directs light exactly where it’s needed.

Color temperature between 2700–3000 K supports evening visual comfort and doesn’t disrupt natural circadian rhythms. A neutral temp near 3000 K can be suitable if the LED reading lamp is also used during daytime. Avoid cold light, which increases fatigue during long focus periods.

CRI (Color Rendering Index) should be at least 80, ideally 90. Higher CRI ensures natural color perception of illustrations and text. Low-quality light sources may cause color distortion, leading to visual discomfort.

Beam angle is recommended between 30–60°. A narrower beam focuses light on the page, while a wider beam creates a softer transition to the surroundings. Poorly chosen optics can lead to too little intensity or overly sharp contrast.

Glare control is essential. The light source should be recessed or covered by a diffuser. Direct exposure to LED chips often causes discomfort, especially in the evening.

LED cooling affects long-term performance stability. A sturdy aluminum body helps dissipate heat and maintain consistent brightness over extended use.

Dimming is practically essential. Every quality reading lamp should offer smooth intensity adjustment without flicker. Lowering brightness in the evening improves comfort and extends the light source life.

Practical Example: Reading Lamp in the Living Room

In a 25 m² living room with a 2.7 m ceiling height, the main lighting can come from a ceiling fixture, while a reading floor lamp is positioned next to an armchair. Recommended brightness is 500–700 lm with dimming capability. The lamp arm should be adjustable so the light hits the book at around 30–45° angle.

In a 15 m² bedroom, a bedside reading lamp can complement the main ceiling light. The light source height should be approx. 110–130 cm from the floor, depending on mattress height. A common mistake is installing the lamp too high, which lights above the head instead of on the text. In such cases, even a high-quality reading lamp won’t deliver optimal results.

Design, Ergonomics, and Proportions of a Reading Lamp

Floor reading lamps should match the furniture scale and interior style. A slim design fits well beside a delicate armchair, while a sturdier model balances larger seating sets. Every reading lamp needs a stable base to prevent wobbling during use.

Ergonomics improve with a tilt or swivel head. An adjustable head allows precise beam positioning without moving the whole fixture. This keeps the reading lamp practical even if the room layout changes.

Light Control and Long-Term Value of a Reading Floor Lamp

Dividing light circuits allows independent control of the task area. A reading floor lamp should be connected to a power outlet circuit with sufficient capacity, or a separately switched line planned during electrical design.

Long-term value lies in stable output, quality build, and reliable flicker-free dimming. A properly designed reading lamp provides even, comfortable light for everyday use and maintains its performance over years.
